What is a lithium-ion battery?

A lithium-ion battery stores energy by moving lithium ions between two electrodes as it charges and discharges. In electric machines it does the same job as a lead-acid battery — without the watering, the acid and the long charging routine.

A built-in battery management system (BMS) monitors the cells — voltage, current and temperature — and protects the battery against overcharging, deep discharge and overheating.

Why switch to lithium-ion.

No daily maintenance

No watering, no acid to handle and no equalising charges. Lithium-ion batteries don’t give off gas while charging, so they don’t need a ventilated battery room.

Charge in the breaks

A lithium-ion battery can be topped up during breaks and shift changes without harming it — machines keep working instead of waiting for a battery swap.

Steady power

The voltage stays steady as the battery discharges, so the machine doesn’t lose speed or lifting power towards the end of the shift.

Longer service life

Lithium-ion batteries last many more charge cycles than lead-acid batteries — fewer replacements to buy and ship to the island.

What the numbers on a battery mean, and what to check before you choose one.

Voltage (V): Must match the machine. Some batteries list two figures, such as 48 (51.2) V: the system voltage the machine is built for, and the battery’s nominal voltage.
Capacity (Ah): How much charge the battery holds. More amp-hours means a longer run time at the same voltage.
Stored energy (kWh): The energy available: voltage × capacity ÷ 1,000. A 48 V, 150 Ah battery stores about 7.2 kWh.
IP rating: Protection against dust and water. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets.
